The photograph and signature rules that get applications rejected

A blurred signature can end an application before anyone reads it. The notice says so twice, in the same section, in the same words: rejected summarily.

What the same notice also says, and almost nobody mentions, is that there is a route which switches those rejections off entirely.

The signature spec, exactly

Para 11.10 of the SSC Selection Posts notice for 2026:

The rejection line is unambiguous: “Applications with inappropriate photographs or blurred/miniature signatures, not meeting with the prescribed requirement, will be rejected summarily.”

The 10 KB floor is the one that catches people. A signature scanned properly at a sensible resolution can come out well under it, and compressing it further to hit a size target is what produces the blur the notice is rejecting.

Scan on white paper, crop tight to the signature, and check the file size before you compress anything.

The photograph is not a file you upload

This is the part that has genuinely changed, and old guides get it wrong.

Para 11.7 says candidates “are not required to have a pre-existing photograph” for the application. The module captures a real-time photograph while you fill the form. You stand or sit in front of the camera when prompted.

Which means the old routine — studio photo, scan, resize to the stated pixels — is not what this form wants.

The instructions for that live capture:

• Find a place with good light and a plain background
• Camera at eye level before you take it
• Sit directly in front of the lens and look straight ahead
• Face fully inside the area the camera marks out, neither too close nor too far
• No cap, no mask, no glasses or spectacles

Para 11.8 adds a full frontal view, and requires that your appearance at the exam matches the photograph on the form.

The rule people trip over

Para 11.8 again: “In no case should the candidate capture the photograph of his/her pre-existing photograph. All such applications where the photograph of his/her pre-existing photograph is captured will be rejected summarily.”

In plain terms — do not hold up an old passport photo to the webcam.

It is an understandable instinct if you are applying at night, or from a room you think looks untidy. It is also the one action in this section that the notice singles out for summary rejection by name.

The Aadhaar route turns all of this off

Here is the provision worth knowing about, because it appears four separate times in section 11 and is never the headline anywhere.

If you opt for Aadhaar-based authentication during One Time Registration:

• Your application “will not be rejected on the ground that photograph and/or signature uploaded by the candidate are not as per prescribed standards” (para 11.6)
• The photograph-instructions rejection does not apply to you (para 11.8)
• The wrong-format-photograph rejection does not apply to you (para 11.9)
• The blurred-signature rejection does not apply to you (para 11.10)

And para 11.6 adds a second benefit that has nothing to do with the form: such candidates are not required to bring recent colour photographs or an original valid photo-identity proof to the examination venue.

The notice recommends this route in its own words — candidates “are advised to opt for Aadhaar Based Authentication”.

If I were filling this form, that is the single decision I would take carefully, and I would take it at the registration stage rather than the application stage, because that is where it is offered.

One Time Registration, and the old site

Para 11.5 carries a trap for anyone who has applied to SSC before.

The Commission moved to a new website, ssc.gov.in. An OTR generated on the old ssc.nic.in “will not be functional on the new website”. If your OTR is from the old site, you have to generate a new one before you can apply at all.

Once generated on the new site, it stays valid for every examination notified there afterwards.

The practical consequence: do this on the day the notice opens, not on the closing date. Para 11.4 warns about heavy load on the website in the closing days, and an OTR failure on the last afternoon is not something you can fix by trying again.

Preview before you submit

Para 11.12 asks candidates to use the Preview option and check every field, including the photograph, before submitting.

It is easy to skip and it is the last free check you get. The correction window for this notice opened a week after applications closed and ran for three days — a narrow slot, and one that carries its own online payment step.
