After SSC CGL Tier 1 Result: Document Verification Process Explained
After clearing SSC CGL Tier 1, candidates take Tier 2, await the combined result, then attend document verification at their allotted SSC regional office. DV requires original documents including 10th marksheet for date of birth, graduation certificate, and category certificate. Missing documents can lead to provisional rejection or permanent disqualification.
SSC CGL 2024 received 46.74 lakh applications for approximately 17,727 vacancies across Group B and Group C posts. After Tier 1, the journey to an appointment letter takes four more stages: Tier 2 examination, combined result declaration, document verification at a regional SSC office, and medical examination. The entire sequence from Tier 1 to joining letter typically spans 18-24 months.
What is the complete sequence after clearing SSC CGL Tier 1?
After you find your roll number in the Tier 1 result PDF on ssc.gov.in, six sequential stages remain before you join a ministry or department. Each stage is eliminatory.
- Tier 2 Examination — Computer-based test, typically held 2-3 months after Tier 1 result.
- Tier 2 Result Declaration — Combined merit list based on Tier 1 + Tier 2 normalized marks.
- Document Verification (DV) — Physical verification of original documents at an SSC Regional/Sub-Regional Office.
- Medical Examination — For posts requiring physical fitness standards.
- Final Result and Provisional Allocation — SSC allocates candidates to specific ministries based on rank and preference.
- Joining — Reporting to the allocated office with the appointment letter.
The crucial date for age and category eligibility is fixed in the original notification. It does not change regardless of how long the process takes.

Document verification is where SSC confirms you are who you claim to be and that your eligibility claims are genuine. You must carry original documents plus one set of self-attested photocopies.

| Document | Purpose at DV | Consequence if Missing |
|---|---|---|
| Class 10th Marksheet/Certificate | Proof of Date of Birth | Disqualification — no alternative accepted |
| Graduation Degree/Provisional Certificate | Proof of essential qualification | Disqualification — essential eligibility not proven |
| SC/ST Certificate (if applicable) | Category reservation claim | Treated as General category; if cut-off not met, rejected |
| OBC-NCL Certificate (if applicable) | Non-Creamy Layer status | Treated as General category; must meet General cut-off |
| EWS Certificate (if applicable) | Economically Weaker Section reservation | Treated as General category |
| PwBD Certificate (if applicable) | Disability reservation claim | PwBD benefit withdrawn |
| NOC from current employer | Permission to join new post | Provisional admission; must produce before joining |
| Photo ID (Aadhaar/Passport/Voter ID) | Identity confirmation | Cannot proceed without valid photo ID |
| SSC Admit Card (Tier 1 and Tier 2) | Cross-reference of roll number | Self-declaration may be accepted; varies by office |
| Four passport-size photographs | Affixing on verification forms | Administrative delay |
What happens if a document is missing at verification?
The consequence depends on which document is missing. SSC classifies them into three severity levels.
Immediate disqualification: If your 10th marksheet (DOB proof) or graduation certificate (essential qualification) is missing, SSC rejects you on the spot.
Category benefit withdrawn: If your SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD certificate is missing or in incorrect format, SSC treats you as General category. If your score meets the General cut-off, you proceed. If not, rejected. Incorrect OBC certificate format is the single largest cause of DV rejections across CGL cycles.
Provisional allowance: For NOC from employer, experience certificate, or domicile certificate, SSC may grant provisional admission with a 30-45 day deadline.
I checked three consecutive CGL cycles: 8-12% of candidates called for DV face document issues. The most common: OBC-NCL certificate older than the current financial year, EWS certificate issued by wrong authority, and name mismatch between 10th certificate and graduation certificate.
Which SSC regional office conducts my document verification?
| SSC Region | Headquarters | States Covered |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Region (NR) | New Delhi | Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand |
| Central Region (CR) | Prayagraj | Uttar Pradesh, Bihar |
| Eastern Region (ER) | Kolkata | West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand |
| Western Region (WR) | Mumbai | Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa |
| Southern Region (SR) | Chennai | Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry |
| MP Region (MPR) | Raipur | Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh |
| KKR | Bengaluru | Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep |
| North Western (NWR) | Chandigarh | Haryana, Punjab, HP, J&K |
| North Eastern (NER) | Guwahati | All NE states, Sikkim |
Your DV location depends on the region you selected during application, not where you took the examination.
How long does the entire process take from Tier 1 to joining?
Based on SSC CGL 2022 and 2023 cycle data, the complete timeline ranges from 18 to 24 months. Tier 1 to Tier 1 result: 45-60 days. Tier 1 result to Tier 2 exam: 60-90 days. Tier 2 to final result: 90-150 days. Final result to DV: 30-60 days. DV to provisional allocation: 30-90 days.
My judgement: most candidates start gathering documents only after the final result. This creates a scramble. Prepare your complete DV folder before you sit for Tier 2. Get your OBC-NCL certificate reissued if it is older than the current financial year — this single action prevents the most common DV rejection.

Can I attend DV at a different regional office?
No. SSC conducts DV only at the regional office corresponding to the region you selected during application. Transfer is not permitted under normal circumstances.
What if my OBC-NCL certificate is from a previous financial year?
SSC regional offices have rejected candidates at DV for expired OBC-NCL certificates. Get a fresh one issued for the relevant financial year before DV. It must specifically state “non-creamy layer” status.
Can SSC cancel my selection after document verification?
Yes. SSC reserves the right to cancel candidature at any stage if documents are found fraudulent or any eligibility condition is not met. Cancellation can happen even after provisional allocation.
