How to read a recruitment notice

A recruitment notice is not written to be read straight through. The one I used as the example on this site runs to 129 pages, and about nine of them decide whether your application survives.

This is the order I read them in, and why.

The worked example is Staff Selection Commission Advertisement No. Phase-XIV/2026 for Selection Posts, uploaded on 13 April 2026. Any notice will have the same bones.

Every aggregator in this niche transcribes notices, and transcription introduces errors that then get copied sideways across forty sites. The notice is a free public document on the commission’s own domain.

Open it, and use the search function. Most of what follows is a search term.

Step one — the box on page one

Five dates, in a table, before any prose. Applications open, applications close, fee payment closes, correction window, examination.

Two things to notice immediately.

The fee deadline is usually a day after the application deadline. In this notice, 4 May for the form and 5 May for the money.

The examination date will often say “tentative”. In this one it says “June, 2026 (Tentative)”. That word is load-bearing and gets dropped in every summary I have read.

Step two — search for “crucial date”

This is the single highest-value search in any notice.

It tells you the day on which your category status is judged — and, in a well-drafted notice, what that does not mean. The 2026 notice puts it at para 3.4 and says explicitly that it “does not mean that the date of certificate(s) should be before the closing date of application”.

Then search “as on”. That usually finds the age reference date, which is frequently a different day from the crucial date.

Step three — find your category paragraph

Section 3 in this notice, and it is short. One paragraph per category.

Read only yours, and read every sentence in it. This is where the details live that no summary carries — the note that the Commission will not insist on an OBC certificate issued within the cut-off date, or the exact financial-year formula for an EWS certificate.

Then find the annexure number that paragraph points to. Print that annexure. It is the format the certificate has to be in.

Step four — the fee paragraph

Search “Fee”. It will be one short section, and it settles four things: how much, how you can pay, who does not pay, and what happens if the payment fails.

The exemption list is worth reading rather than assuming. In this notice it is women, SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen eligible for reservation — and OBC and EWS candidates are not on it.

Step five — the form mechanics

Section 11 in this notice. It is boring and it is where applications die.

Three questions to answer from it:

• Does my existing One Time Registration still work, or do I need a new one?
• Is the photograph captured live, or do I upload a file?
• What exactly does the signature spec say — format, file size, dimensions?

And one more, which is easy to miss and changes all of the above: whether Aadhaar-based authentication is offered, and what it switches off.

Step six — the paragraph you skip, and shouldn’t

Search for “provisional”.

In this notice, para 1 says the Commission does not verify the details you fill in, that the application is accepted provisionally, and that scrutiny happens after the exam result, by the user department.

It puts one phrase in capitals: “The candidature of applicants shall be purely PROVISIONAL at all stages of the recruitment process.”

This reframes everything else. Nothing you submit is checked at submission. So the accuracy has to come from you, and the consequences arrive months later.

If you need a scribe or compensatory time

Search “scribe”, and read the whole section rather than the summary of it.

The notice will tell you which disability categories get a scribe on request, which need a physical-limitation certificate, and which annexure each one uses. It will also tell you whether your own scribe has to register separately — in this notice they must complete One Time Registration and Aadhaar authentication.

The wider rules are in a state of flux, which is unusual and worth knowing about before you plan around anything you read elsewhere.

The annexures are not optional reading

Most of the page count in any notice is annexures, and people treat them as appendices. They are the actual forms.

In this notice they carry the scribe proformas, the disability certificate format, the OBC certificate format, the EWS Income and Asset certificate format, the list of competent authorities, the One Time Registration instructions, and the vacancy tables.

If a paragraph in the body points you at an annexure, go and look at it. That is where the requirement is written down.
