The dates that decide your application

Most recruitment notices carry four or five dates in the box on page one, and two or three more buried in the body. They do different jobs, and mixing them up is the commonest self-inflicted wound in this process.

This page separates them. The worked example throughout is a real notice — Staff Selection Commission Advertisement No. Phase-XIV/2026 for Selection Posts — because a live document beats a generic explanation.

The dates on page one

Note the gap. The correction window opens a week after applications close, and runs for three days. If you notice a mistake on 6 May, you wait five days and then have a narrow slot.

Note also that the exam date is marked tentative on the face of the notice. Anything you read elsewhere presenting it as fixed is adding certainty the commission did not.

The crucial date, which is not a deadline at all

This is the date most people misunderstand, and the 2026 notice happens to explain it better than most.

Para 3.4 fixes the crucial date for claiming SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD or ESM status, fee concession and reservation at 4 May 2026 — the closing date. Then it says what that does not mean:

“The crucial date here does not mean that the date of certificate(s) should be before the closing date of application, it means that on the crucial date, the candidate(s) must fall under the categories SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD/ESM, as applicable.”

The date attaches to your status, not to your paperwork.

Age is usually measured on a different date

This is where two dates coexist in one notice without contradiction.

The DoPT rule for category status defaults to the closing date “except in cases where crucial date is fixed otherwise”. Notices routinely fix age otherwise — pinned to a fixed calendar date rather than to when applications happen to close.

So a notice can measure your category on one date and your age on another. Both are correct. Both need reading.

The habit worth building: when you open a notice, find the age reference date and the crucial date, and write both at the top of your own notes before you read anything else.

The financial year, for EWS candidates

A third kind of date, and it is not on page one at all.

An EWS Income and Asset certificate is described by two financial years — the one it is valid for, and the one whose income it is based on. The second is always the year before the first.

In the 2026 notice, para 3.3 spells it out: a certificate “valid for the financial Year 2026-2027 issued on the basis of Income for the financial year 2025-2026”.

Which year you need is decided by where the closing date falls, and the Indian financial year turns on 1 April. A notice closing in early April sits in a new financial year by days.

What is not decided by any of these dates

Two things people expect to be, and are not.

Document upload. In this process, documents are uploaded after the computer-based examination result, by candidates who qualified. Not with the form.

Verification. Para 1 of the notice says the Commission does not verify what you fill in. Scrutiny is done by the user department, after the result. In the notice’s own capitals: “The candidature of applicants shall be purely PROVISIONAL at all stages of the recruitment process.”

So nothing about your application is settled on the closing date except which day your status is judged against.

Two dates to add yourself

Neither is in the notice, and both save more trouble than any of the ones that are.

The day you complete One Time Registration. Make it the first week. Para 11.4 warns of heavy website load in the closing days, and an OTR that fails on the last afternoon is not a problem you can retry your way out of. An OTR from the old ssc.nic.in site does not work on the new one.

The day you go for the certificate. Before the notice opens, not after. Every EWS candidate in your district is in the same queue in the same week, and the officer signing it has to verify documents under the process your state prescribes.
